“The Dungeon Masters” – Not reviewed… yet.
I was recently asked on Facebook to be a fan for a new independent documentary, “The Dungeon Masters” by director Keven McAlester. From what I get from the trailer, the documentary focuses on the lives of three individuals who play the popular role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons®. As a player of most any RPG, I thought it was interesting to see what would come of this given the bad press D&D used to get and I’m sure to some degree still does.
I have not yet seen this movie and therefore this post is not a review… of the movie, anyway.
When I came across an interview of one of the three, Elizabeth Reesman, on a third-party website I posted the interview’s link on the documentary’s FB page:
This particular interview was not entirely favorable for the newly released movie as Elizabeth, according to her interview, was asked if she was “portrayed fairly in The Dungeon Masters?” Her answer was “Not at all” and according to the website containing the interview, she listed several things that she feels misrepresented her.
It should be noted that I know no one involved with the movie including Ms. Reesman nor have I ever had any contact with them.
I posted the link on the FB page after I read the interview. And having been around the block a couple of times and knowing how sensitive a production company can be about their new baby, I took a screenshot of the post.
I wasn’t quick enough to get a shot of my response to another fan’s comment in which he hoped the movie would not negatively portray gamers. My comment was something like “Looks like it did”, my opinion after reading Ms. Reesman’s interview.
That, too, was deleted:
A follow-up was posted and someone responded:
“No reason”? Bad press is certainly a good enough reason, I would suspect. Censorship or someone has a shaky mouse hand at that page. Interestingly, the default view of the page’s wall was changed to the the management’s comments only. You’d have to click on “Just Fans” or both their comments and ours to read it. Sorry, I smell bullshit.
In all fairness, the interviews with the other two cast members, Richard Meeks and Scott Corum, are also online and they seemed to have a good time with the filming and enjoyed the outcome to some degree.
Read for yourself.

Hi, I came across this looking for reviews of the doc.
You might be interested to know that they’ve also removed the reviews section from the Facebook page, likely in response to The RPG Examiner’s scathing review (http://www.examiner.com/x-6911-RPG-Examiner~y2010m4d11-The-Dungeon-Masters-Exploitative-pandering).
Also, hi! Nice to “meet” you, ish. I’m the girl subject of the doc.
Ah, welcome and thanks for the info. I frankly forgot about their project after the utter irresponsibility they showed and cowardice displayed in deleting the comments. Using the very system that permits free speech to censor someone else is hypocrisy in its highest form.
Now they delete reviews. Brilliant work. Ah, well.
You know, I have gaming buddies in
the industry. Who’s up to make a truthful film?
And a pleasure to meet you as well!
